Cantante estadounidense de blues y de jazz. Cantaba tanto canciones populares como blues en los minstrel shows y en espectáculos de vodevil. En 1923 comenzó a grabar discos y apareció en el filme St. Louis Blues (1929). Sus interpretaciones representan la etapa cúlmine de la transición del blues, desde la tradición folclórica rural hacia su estructura y expresividad urbanas. Artista atrevida y sumamente segura, de voz potente y dicción precisa, se hizo conocida como la "emperatriz del blues. Smith fue la artista afroamericana más exitosa de su tiempo. Murió a consecuencia de las lesiones recibidas en un accidente automovilístico y se dice que, de haber sido blanca, habría recibido tratamiento médico con mayor prontitud y podría haber sobrevivido. Las circunstancias reales del tratamiento que recibió no están claras.
